Rich

The measurements I sent are from a MkI* U.C. i dont have easy access to the top bit. Kevin will be able to help. The top one is not the same (not on my Bren anyhow)

RichardT10829 26-08-12 18:01

Ok thanks for that Lynn... i can get the lower ones drilled and set in the interim so many thanks for taking the time to share the measurements.

anyone able to assist with the upper ones ?

cheers

Richie

Rich, Is that angle iron dimension not in Nigels Vol 3 book, in the drawing box?, If not can measure for you. I think that angle iron has a 'kink' in it both ends.

kev.

RichardT10829 27-08-12 21:07

Yes that's right Kev it kinks where the armour squares are, I have done this with mine... To be totally honest I completely forgot to check the plans box that came with Nigel's book, so with that in mind, and a red face I might add, I will run through to the dining room and check :)

Marc van Aalderen 27-08-12 21:40

Hi Richie,

You are making good progress now it seems. Well done so far! Glad you finally updated your thread. Like to keep up with your resto. Thanks.

It was nice meeting you at W&P even if it was just for a short moment. I do hope you will be there next time with your Carrier!

Cheers,

RichardT10829 27-08-12 23:00

It's going to be there if I can afford to ship it there, that is my main problem... It was a pleasure to meet you too by the way.

Kev I looked through Nigels book / plans but no joy.

Lynn Eades 28-08-12 08:23

Kevin

I think he wants the rivet spacings not the dimension of the angle iron its self.

RichardT10829 28-08-12 09:49

sorry yes Lynn is right its the plotting points for the rivet holes I am after

RichardT10829 07-08-13 18:38

Hi folks I am still after the rivet space measurements for this angle iron, is it the same between mk1* and mk2* ?

These are the only remaining rivets on my hull to do.

Can anyone help ?

RichardT10829 09-08-13 11:54

No one out there with a Mk1* a camera, and a tape measure ?

Ben 09-08-13 12:06

Richie

I can measure the Scout at the weekend but the layout looks to be different. Us early carriers don't have the seperate corners.

Ben

RichardT10829 09-08-13 12:14

Cheers Ben, your scout and Bren will be different I think.

Lynn Eades 09-08-13 12:25

Isn't there a bloke up there with about 4 MkI's?

kevin powles 09-08-13 15:16

Rich, can measure on Sunday. You are talking about the long angle piece behind the drivers and gunners head?.

Kevin.

RichardT10829 09-08-13 15:23

Yes mate the very same it is riveted to the centre bulkhead and has the kinks in it where it meets the armour squares in the corners.

Cheers, thought for a moment I was going to have to jump in my car and pop down to the Bovington tank museum.

Ron Pier 09-08-13 19:08

Why would you contemplate that Richard? At Bovy they only have a MK2 experimental and the strange Praying Mantis thing. Ron

RichardT10829 09-08-13 20:07

Do they not have a mk1 too ?

Ron Pier 09-08-13 20:20

I'm a friend of the museum and I've been there hundreds of times Richard and I've never seen one, and I've been privvy to the reserve collection. There must be another option between Dorset and the North East! Ron

RichardT10829 09-08-13 20:24

I have never been matey can't believe they don't have a mk1 tish humpf !

Most folk I know of downwards have mk2's and upwards the only mk1 I know of is Nigel's and that's in Dundee in barbarian territory

Actually now that you got me thinking, Rick, Shaun, and Kev have mk1's.then there is Ben who is a connoisseur having the scout and the Bren

I could burgle all those guys... I mean ask those guys

RichardT10829 09-08-13 21:15

Ok folks a pal has emailed me from Canada with all the dimensions I require. So Kev you don't need to climb in your carriers now.

Thanks anyways

The Tank museum is certainly worth a visit if you come down this way on holiday or something. It is supposed to be a TANK museum, but some exhibits have ended up there by default and not strictly correct if somewhat related.
Here are the carriers. Ron

eddy8men 09-08-13 21:23

rich if you ever need to come and have a look then you are only a couple of hours drive from me, I might even have a spare part or two that you need :D

OK hopefully bigger images? Ron

RichardT10829 09-08-13 21:23

It's on my to do list Ron that and the muckleborough collection. Just 100% focused now on getting the carrier done tested and run in before next year...

Cheers Rick I will hold you to it !

Lynn Eades 10-08-13 01:48

So Rich, while you are going through the names, How many of them are British built?

RichardT10829 10-08-13 03:21

erm...... none I think, cant recall if Nigels was Canadian or British.

however I beleive Bens are both british built (Scout / Bren) i wont cheat and trawl the threads though. Shauns could possibly be a Brit Mk1 i have not had a close look at it yet.

EDIT: nope his are both Canadian built

Ron Pier 10-08-13 09:15

Anyone spotted the sticky out arms on the Tank Museum carrier? Ron

Ron,
Those fixtures date back to when the Carrier was used as a test rig at Chertsey. All to do with variable ground pressure when experimenting with the ideas of hovercraft.

Ron Pier 10-08-13 11:15

Exactly so Richard. I was going to post up the Museum right up, but you've mostly covered it. The museum list it as a MK2 when in fact I'm sure it's a MK3. It's got strange tanks and piping inside. I'd love to get hold of it and make it correct. They disagree at the museum, stating that it is part of the history of the vehicle. To my mind it was something that was worthless at the time and a suitable hunk of iron to use as a test bed for other purposes. Their logic suggests that anyone who has retrieved a loggers carrier should leave it as such?? Next time I'm there I'll take some more pictures. Ron

PS sorry to high-jack Richards thread. I'll start a new one when I take pictures.

RichardT10829 10-08-13 14:51

I have left some things as they were on mine there is evidence of a winch being bolted to the glacis then cut out with a gas axe...I suppose the carrier above has its own story to tell..... But to leave a log skidder carrier like mine (and many others) as chopped up hulks s nuts.
